For more than two decades, Mozilla has invested in visionary ideas, global leaders, and people-centered campaigns to ensure the internet remains open and accessible to all.

This work comes alive each year at MozFest: Part tech-and-society convening, part maker festival, part art exhibition — and the premier gathering for activists in diverse global movements fighting for a more humane digital world.

#MozFest offers meaningful ways to be together, from virtual reality, to livestreams, to simply typing together in a text document. No matter who you are or how you want to connect, the MozFest community welcomes you. You can access the on-demand content 24/7, but live content is 12 hours a day.
March 7-11, 2022.

Case Study from the MozFest2021 presented by:

More than ever, our online lives and societal issues are interconnected, and Artificial Intelligence is at the nexus. We know what’s at risk if AI is not trustworthy: our safety, security, privacy, and equality.

But at Mozilla, we don’t shy away from tackling big issues — like ensuring the
technology embedded in our daily lives helps, rather than harms, humanity.

What challenges SpatialChat cover for your organization?
SpatialChat allows our community to re-enact those face-to-face hallway conversations, coffee queue chats, and after-session experiments that we miss now that we convene virtually.

Mozilla Festival, affectionately known as MozFest, is a unique hybrid: part art, tech and society convening, part maker festival, and the premiere gathering for activists in diverse global movements fighting for a more humane digital world.

The festival is known for its community feel, the diverse audience it attracts and covering a huge range of topics often eschewed by more ‘pure tech’ conferences. By Guardian

What made our solution stand out over others that you researched?
The ease to navigate and join, as well as the simplicity to set up the space. The platform works well for those with lower bandwidth / older & less powerful hardware.

Who is your audience?
Artists, activists, technologists, designers, students, and journalists, anyone who is interested in making our digital world a better place.

The festival harnesses the collective power of unexpected partnerships — from analog artists and public interest technologists to policymakers and queer activists — to disrupt the status quo and reframe and reimagine our online world. We write code. We create art. We brainstorm products and policies that put people first.

As The City Whispers

As the City Whispers is a collaborative exercise hosted during Mozfest 2021 using Spatial Chat and Google Docs. Starting from a pre-created neighborhood map and the many living and non-living entities that inhabit it, the visitors are invited to imagine the exchanges between these different entities as they try and care for their community and their surroundings.

27 Sessions Exploring Human-Computer Creativity

At MozFest this year, our team of Creative AI Wranglers set out to create a space to collectively re-envision, question, and interact with AI and its effects on our daily lives. Our aim was to fuel a community that can create a brighter future where humans and machines collaborate to unleash the best of us. One virtual MozFest, 27 Creative AI sessions, and many Spatial Chat conversations and Zoom calls later, here’s a recap of some of our favorite moments from the Creative AI space at MozFest 2021.

2022 | parties, networking events, film screenings

  1. Zine Fair  -  For the MozFest Zine Exhibition, we’ll set up an online zine gallery for the public to explore asynchronously, which will be a snazzy place to showcase your creations. The exhibition will be available during the entire festival period (March 7 - 11th and beyond).
  2. Broadcast Room (Movie Theater)
  3. Coffee Chats
  4. HelpDesk

There are many positive feedback on social media from last year, look for #MozFest2021

How do you customize your space?
We customize backgrounds, gifs, videos, hidden but linked rooms, passwords, Help Desk...

Any tips & tricks for our readers on how to organize an event?
Ensure people have a reason for showing up. Giving our participants an intention for jumping into SpatialChat created a lot more excitement around the platform than just having the space always open to exploring (but having both is the perfect option)
